Welcome to The Musical Companion Vol. 4 Festival for The Earth created by Sarah Bowman and presented by Pillow Song. Pillow Song launched the Musical Companion series four years ago when the challenges of the pandemic gave rise to a great need for healing among peers. The MC festival concept is based on studies by Ai Kawakami and others that explore music’s ability to evoke vicarious emotions in listeners and promote learning and well-being. Combining these two outcomes has a different impact than music for the purpose of entertainment. Our festival band not only plays an important supporting role, you are also an important part of the experience.

Each festival night starts with spoken word pieces. This is a long, cohesive improvisation with Sarah and the band with themes such as:

– action empowerment
– responding to climate grief
– generating compassion
– tuning into indigenous voices
– wholeheartedness
– consumer awareness
– internal and external biodiversity
– fostering a connection to nature
– thanking the earth

The premise of the Musical Companion series is that through music we can meaningfully connect to one another to collectively foster positive social change. The selected artists have chosen or written songs that help express these themes. Therefore, the program represents diverse voices. Our hope is that while sharing meaningful exchanges together as performers and listeners alike, we’re getting the emotional support we need with live music to flourish within our community. Thank you for helping to provide companionship through music for everyone it reaches.
